Load Testing?

Why you need to perform a load test

Proof load tests are generally carried out to ensure that a lifting appliance will safely perform all of its functions while supporting a load. And that’s where load testing equipment comes in.

Lifting appliances includes (but is not limited to) the following equipment:

  • Cranes;
  • Winches;
  • Launching appliances for lifeboats (davits);
  • Gangways and ladders;
  • Lifting beams;
  • Pad eyes;
  • Lifts for personnel and goods.

When lifting people or equipment, there is always the risk of dangerous situations that might affect the safety of people involved or bystanders. Therefore, you cannot leave anything to chance when it comes to checking the condition of the lifting appliances. After all, there’s no compromise when it comes to safety of persons.

A load test is an internationally accepted method of demonstrating that a lifting appliance is safe to use. This is described in various standards aimed at guaranteeing safety while lifting. Load tests are performed when various equipment is newly installed, repaired, modified and during periodic inspection.

Most common periodic inspections includes the following:

  • Visual examination;
  • Functional testing;
  • Assessing and measuring the wear and checking for play;
  • Load testing;
  • Examination of vital parts after the load test(s) has been performed.

Proof loads typically varies between 100% and 250% of the safe working load (SWL), depending on the type of lifting appliance.

As you know now, the load tests can be performed by using load testing equipment, such as load links and water bags.

Which equipment you need for a load test

The way to perform a load test highly depend on the type of equipment and available resources. For this reason, there’s multiple choices in choosing the right load testing equipment.

Example 1: A hanging waterbag would be the best choice for a ship’s deck crane. After all, water to fill the bag will most likely be available from the ship’s firefighting system or water from outside the ship can be used using pumps.

Example 2: To test pad-eyes (lugs) inside a ship’s engine room, a pad-eye tester is the logical choice. That is because these are easy to use and equally important is that you can test many eyes in a short time with it.

Example 3: To test the on-load function of the release hooks of a lifeboat, there are two options. Option 1 is to place lifeboat bags inside the lifeboat. Option 2 is to use an hydraulic test set. Subsequently, Loadec can offer all these types of equipment.

Which type of crane can be load tested

Basically any type of crane can be load tested. For example:

  • Carry Deck Crane;
  • Floating Crane;
  • Lifeboat handling Crane (davit);
  • Bulk-handling Crane;
  • Harbor Crane;
  • Level Luffing Crane.
  • Telescopic Crane;
  • Mobile Crane;
  • Truck Mounted Crane;
  • Tower Crane;
  • Hammerhead Crane;
  • Rough Terrain Crane;
  • JIB Crane;
  • Bridge Crane;
  • Gantry Crane;
  • Overhead Crane;
  • Crawler Crane.

Typically multiple options of load testing equipment is available for these cranes.
